Enrichment Activities

Beyond Lakewood Catholic Academy's rich classroom curriculum,
there are a host of activities available to our students to
further broaden their horizons and hone leadership skills. Quite simply, there is
something for everyone!
Student Council
Student Council is open to students in grades 5-8.
The Student Council provides opportunities for the LCA
student body to work together through participation in service
projects and other activities which promote school spirit and
pride. It also
allows students to develop and foster leadership skills. Student
Council is moderated by Eighth Grade teacher Mr. Matt Tabar.

The Instrumental Music Program
Lakewood Catholic Academy is home to an outstanding elective
instrumental music program. Under the direction of Christine Dolce
and James Taylor, LCA students can participate in the program
beginning in the fourth grade. There are class-level bands in
the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, a combined seventh- and
eighth-grade band, and a jazz band. Approximately 50 percent of
eligible LCA students participate in the program. The program is
fee-based, but there are scholarships available based on need.

The Drama Club
The Drama Club meets weekly in the fall and spring and is
open to all 7th and 8th graders. Students are introduced to
various forms of drama, including improvisation, readers'
theater, musicals, and monologues. Every spring, a
performance is presented to the students and parents and
showcases
the talents of Drama Club members. Moderator is 8th grade teacher
Sue Seeds.

The Science Fair
All 7th and 8th Grade students participate in a school science
fair. This requires hard work from the students from October -
February. Qualifying students then have the opportunity to move on and
compete at the regional level in March.

Saints Scroll: The LCA Student Newspaper
Through the "Saints Scroll," LCA students compile news
stories about events and literature that involves the LCA
community. Students learn proper reporting formats, writing and
editing skills, and publishing. The moderator is Language Arts
teacher Mrs. Kelly Prest.

Art Club
Lakewood Catholic Academy has an Art Club for students in
Grades 6-8. The club meets twice a month on Wednesdays from 3-4
p.m. in the ART room. The dates vary. Art Club is a place where
students can create, express themselves, and grow! ART Club
members are currently working on independent projects.
Students choose from a variety of materials, tools, and
supplies and let their imaginations take off! Past projects have
included: Snow
Globe Making, Posters for School observations of Advent and
Lent, Community Meal Placemats, and Christmas gifts….just to
name a few.
The Lakewood Catholic Academy Choir
Students in grades five through eight may participate in the
"Singing Saints," a multi-part choir under the direction of
Music teacher Mrs.
Amanda Podhradsky. The "Singing Saints" rehearse after school,
generally once a week, and present a Christmas and a spring
concert. The choir also participates in community events, such as
Light Up Lakewood, and members have the opportunity to share
their vocal gifts by cantoring school masses and prayer
services.
In addition to rehearsing music for concert preparation,
choir members learn other valuable vocal skills, such as proper
breathing and posture, sight singing, and how to care for their
voice. The "Singing Saints" are always happy to
welcome new members!

The Green Team
The mission of the Lakewood Catholic Academy Green Team is to
foster and nurture environmental awareness and respect,
primarily using the entire outdoor campus as our setting for
experiential education and also to explore nature’s connection
with our faith. The
Green Team is also responsible for designing, implementing, and
maintaining one service project per year that promotes
environmental awareness in each of the following areas: indoor
facilities of LCA, the outdoor facilities of LCA, and a
community service project within the city of Lakewood.
The Green Team welcomes students in grades 3-8 and Virtus
trained parent volunteers. The Green Team meets on the third
Wednesday of each month in the Small Cafeteria. Meeting time is
2:30 until 4:00 p.m., with an outdoor activity following the
meeting. Additional Saturday afternoon meetings may be called to
complete service projects or attend a special activity.

Classroom of Champions
Classroom of Champions is a Jeopardy-like competition
sponsored by St. Edward High School and open to eighth grade
students. LCA students compete against three other local schools
for a chance to be in the final competition. Faculty
coaches are Mrs. Kathy DiBiasio and Mrs. Sue Seeds.
Junior Model United Nations
Junior Model United Nations is a program where middle school
students are given an introduction to the workings of the United
Nations. School teams represent member countries of the United
Nations and put into practice the skills of debate, compromise,
conflict resolution, negotiation and much, much more!
It is an engaging and fun way for young students to address
the difficulties facing populations in the Developing World and
the interdependence of developed and developing nations. Through
JMUN students begin to understand the workings of world
diplomacy through the lens of current events.
Lakewood Catholic Academy's participation in Junior Model
United Nations is moderated by seventh grade teacher Matt Tabar.
Spelling Bee
Lakewood Catholic Academy students participate in spelling
bees at St. Edward and Magnificat High Schools. An
in-school bee is also held for students in grades five through eight as a
preparation for these extracurricular spelling bees and to
encourage
interest for students in younger grades.
Intramural Sports
In addition to its participation in the Diocese of
Cleveland's CYO sports program, Lakewood Catholic Academy also
provides some intramural sporting activities for younger
children, as well as a Ski Club during the winter months. To
learn more about LCA athletic activities, visit the
athletics page.

The H20 Club
Lakewood Catholic Academy is proud to host a chapter of the
H20 Club. "Help to Others" is a service
learning program operated by the City of Lakewood through the
Department of Human Services/Division of Youth. Dean
of Students Michael Fletcher oversees the school's participation
in the H20 Club.
National Junior Honor Society
Lakewood Catholic Academy is an active member of the National
Junior Honor Society. This organization stresses
intellectual excellence and service to others. NJHS sends out
annual candy cane messages at Christmas and organizes LCA's
celebration of Right to Read Week. Faculty oversight is provided
by eighth grade teacher Kathy DiBiasio.
The Lakewood Catholic Academy Ambassadors
The Student Ambassador Program at LCA is a small group of
specially selected 8th graders who are dedicated to the positive
promotion of Lakewood Catholic Academy. Any student
entering the 8th grade is eligible to apply to become an
ambassador. Student ambassadors play an important role in
welcoming and orienting new students, as well as representing
the school at special events and functions. Eighth grade teacher
Sue Seeds oversees the Ambassador program.
The Eighth Grade Social Justice Project
Each year, eighth grade students at Lakewood Catholic Academy
can choose to participate in a year-long service project of
their own choosing. Throughout the year, the student journal
about their experiences and conduct research about their area of
interest (homelessness, the elderly, persons with disabilities,
etc). As the
year draws to an end, the students make a presentation about
their project to a committee, which awards high school
scholarship funds to the top three projects.
Morning Prayer Leaders
Eighth grade students lead morning prayer each day over the
PA. The group is organized by eighth grade teacher Mrs. Kathy DiBiasio.
Yearbook
LCA students have the opportunity to work on the school's
yearbook. Students help to capture through pictures the story of
every-day life at LCA. Faculty moderators are Kelly Prest
and Patty Holmes, both fifth-grade teachers.
Math Club
Math Club is an opportunity for interested students in Grades
5 - 8 to work collaboratively and creatively outside the
traditional classroom setting. Students engage in solving math
problems that require them to apply their math skills in real
world situations. Math Club members participate in outside
competitions such as Math Counts, Greater the Cleveland Council
of Teachers of Mathematics Problem Solving Tournament, the St.
Edward's Math Classic, and Math Olympiad. Students meet after
school with the Club's moderators, Ms. Kim Smith, Intermediate
Math Teacher and Mrs. Eileen McGuire, Extended Curriculum
Teacher.
